Normally, everyone has some kinds of challenge in his/her life. One of the challenges that one may suffer is disability. Jamie Oliver is one of the wealthiest and the most successful chef and at the same time, he is also an author of almost 20 books. Would you believe if Jamie Oliver have had a disability called Dyslexia? In fact, he was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child, and therefore he had to confront many challenges in his life. He experienced difficulties in learning to read. He said that since he easily got bored when he read books, he was never able to go through the whole book until he finished reading his first book at the age of 38.
In addition, he also had to confront some conflicts at school when he was young. His school lebelled him as 'special needs' and for this reason he was often teased by his classmates for being taken out of class for extra help. Some students in the class used to sang "Special Needs" to the tune of "Let it Be" when they were called out. Dyslexia compromises anywhere between 5 to 10 percent of the general population. Many people may head of dyslexia but not many poeple actually know about it and there is still no known way to fix this disorder. Dyslexic people experience difficulties in learning to read fluently and in understanding accurately no matter how intelligent they are. They have "decreased short-term memory, langauge skills, phonological decoding, and trouble completing simple mathematics from memory." (The Power of Dyslexia) Since they are slow in learning to read, they can read well only when they become adults. However, adults with dyslexia still read slower and make more spelling mistakes than the average people. The disorder with dyslexia brings a lot of negative aspects but can also have positive effects in some ways. Dyslexic people have to work harder to learn to do simple tasks that naturally come to the normal people without the disorder. This aspect develop an intense focus, determination and drive which lead dyslexic people to success. Jamie Oliver is known to be the example of this. In addition to Jamie Oliver, there are many successful people who were dyslexic. For example, Tommy Hilfiger, Alexander Granham Bell, Winston Churchill, Albert Eintein, Steve Jobs and George Washington were all dyslexic. These people inclduing Jamie Oliver became an inspiratoinal example for the millions of people who have had to live with this disorder since they were born.
